  1. 1573-1645. English priest. As archbishop of
  2. Canterbury from 1633, his High Church policy,
  3. support for Charles I's unparliamentary rule,
  4. censorship of the press, and persecution of
  5. the Puritans all aroused bitter opposition,
  6. while his strict enforcement of the statutes
  7. against enclosures and of laws regulating
  8. wages and prices alienated the propertied
  9. classes. His attempt to impose the use of the
  10. Prayer Book on the Scots precipitated the
  11. English Civil War. Impeached by Parliament
  12. 1640, he was imprisoned in the Tower of
  13. London, summarily condemned to death and
  14. beheaded.
